For us living in the Newcastle & Central Coast area, we can grow veggies almost all year around. Here are some of our favourite spring & summer veggies.
Tomatoes.
SEASON: SPRING | SUMMER
Tomatoes are loaded with vitamin C and antioxidants. Perfect to plant when it starts to warm up after winter. Tomatoes need plenty of sun to thrive. Plenty of varieties to choose from. Our favourite is Grosse Lisse, which is tough, strong and high yielding plant with large fruits.
Capsicum.
SEASON: SPRING | SUMMER
Capsicum also known as sweet peppers, are warm season plants. Mulch well. Pick fruit regularly to promote fruiting. Plenty of varieties to choose from. One of our favourites is Capsicum ‘Delight”, which produces sweet, mid-sized fruit that turns from light green to orange, and last red. Can be harvest at all stages.
Carrots.
SEASON: SPRING | WINTER
Root vegetable, mostly orange but also purple and yellow. Great source of beta-carotene, fibre, vitamin K, and oxidants. Avoid too much compost or heavy soils when planting. Our favourite is the purple one, which is loaded with vitamins and sweet to the taste.
Strawberries.
SEASON: SPRING | SUMMER
Beautiful sweet, juicy fruits loaded with iron and antixodants. Mulch well or grow in a hanging basket to protect from slugs and snails.
Zucchini.
SEASON: SPRING | SUMMER
Cylindrical shaped fruits with thin skin and firm flesh. Protect from strong wind. Pick regularly to promote cropping. One of our favourites are ‘Black Jack’, which is a high-yielding variety.
Pumpkin.
SEASON: SPRING | EARLY SUMMER
Pumpking can be stored for months after harvest. They can grow very big and need plenty of space to grow, grows on training vines. Choose a warm sunny position. One of our favourites are ‘Pumpkin Jap’, which has dark green fruit and sweet yellow flesh.
