Winter is the perfect time to plant bareroot trees, here are a guide from our supplier Fleming’s nurseries.
Prune.
You need to prune a bareroot tree before you plant it. Remove 30% to 50% of the branches from the tree evenly using clean secateurs. This will help restore balance to the tree, ensure it flourishes in spring, and contribute to forming a strong branch framework.
Dig a hole.
You need a hole that is 1.5 bigger than the size of the root system. You can put a handful of fertiliser such as Organic booster or 5 in 1 organic pellets at the bottom of the hole. Then put some loose soil at the base of the hole for he plant to “sit on” and to make sure the roots don’t have direct contact with the fertiliser. Fill up with soil around the roots.

Plant.
Make sure to not plant the tree deeper than its transition point. You can easy see this by gently grazing the rootstock. You can use your foot to lightly pack the soil down, not too firmly, just to reduce airpockets in the soil.
Water.
You can make a well around the base of the tree. Fill the well with water the day you plant the tree and then weekly onwards.
