Azalea. (Rhododendron sp.)
- Evergreen shrub with lots of flowers in spring.
- Loves shade, morning sun is ok but avoid afternoon sun if possible. There are also sun-tolerant Azalea varieties available in the market.
- Beautiful range of colours, main flowering in spring and some during autumn.
- Variety of sizes, from 1m to 2m high.
- Azaleas are generally slow-growing and should be planted in acidic soil. Use a specific soil and fertiliser for Azaleas/ Camelias/ Gardenia.
- When planting, soak roots in a bucket or pot with Seasol or Seamax, to help with the transplant chock.
- Maintain cool roots by applying a good layer of mulch, especially during the summer, with at least a depth of 15mm.
- Please be aware that Azaela is highly toxic, so ensure that pets does not eat any of their leaves or flowers.
Common issues are:

- Petal blight: wet flowers left overnight causing fungal reaction. Pick off flowers after rain or trim lightly.
- Lace bug: tiny white spots, giving the leaves a bleached, white appearance. Treat with Conguard.
- Red spider mite: yellowing of leaves or red rusty spots. Treat with Conguard.
